Head of the Ghoulish family Addams was Andy Shaw as Gomez. Apparently of Spanish descent, he maintained his accent, giving a good portrayal of the cigar-smoking Latin lover! Una Culkin played the witch-like Morticia, perfectly showing the allure which captivated her husband. Daughter Wednesday (Ashling Molloy) displayed strong vocals and was convincing in her struggle between her family’s darkness and the ‘normality’ of boyfriend Lucas. James McDowell (brother Pugsley) showed great promise for the future. Christine Stringer and Rosemary O’Connor shared the role of Grandma. Christine looked the part but was not quite zany enough. Harry Coates obviously enjoyed the comedy role as larger than life Uncle Fester. Donal Macauley (Lurch the Butler) employed a marvellously comedic walk, especially when at speed! Lucas Beineke (Gareth Greenfield) had a rich tenor voice and as his mother Alice, Elaine Macauley’s talent for comedy came to the fore. As father Mal, Alan Morton’s tie around forehead was not enough to convey the change from straight-laced to the hippy of his youth. The ensemble joined in many musical numbers to great effect as Ancesters. Their costumes and make-up were excellent and vocals confident.
Costumes for the Family were mostly suitable. The set was a dilapidated Addams mansion with few changes to indicate Central Park, Basement torture chamber etc. There was a good balance between singers and the hidden orchestra. Full of Halloween fun and delicious one-liners, the Director and Choreographer created a delightfully macabre show - the love scene between Uncle Fester and the moon was genius!
