As "the Hand" came through the curtain beckoning us to the world of the morbid and macabre, we were drawn into an unforgettable evening. The Set was simple and effective –a well built Great Hall of the Addams' residence and a beautifully painted cloth for outdoor scenes. Lighting was atmospheric and Sound always clear. Costumes were all appropriate - even the ghostly ancestors, who each developed their own character walk and impressed each time they appeared.
Members of the family Addams each fulfilled their roles in the fashion expected. Sarah King (daughter Wednesday) was a strong character with an amazing voice; Finbar Richman played brother Pudsley, showing mischievous enjoyment of torture and mayhem. Paula Kearney was quirky and feisty as Grandma - and totally hilarious. Uncle Fester - a bald barrel-shaped man with somewhat deranged smile - was played by a woman! Careen Starkey portrayed all the elements of his character to a tee!
"Normal" boyfriend, Lucas Beineke (Chris Poland), started tentatively but gained in confidence as time went on. His mother Alice (Emma-Jane McKnight) was played without inhibitions – especially after drinking the magic potion! Husband Mal (Dean Richman), changed effectively from sober real-estate businessman back to the hippy of his youth. Carol-Anne McKay, as the macabre matriarch Morticia, and Niall McClean as her husband Gomez, made an excellent duo.
Neil Keery’s direction gave the "kooky" feeling the show needed. Choreography by Timmy Bell was innovative and fun. As MD Gareth McGreevy gave a strong lead with his 9 piece orchestra hidden behind the stage.
