From the first moment, when the wonderful theme tune notes of the overture fill the auditorium, the tone is set for a spooky morbid comedy filled with great characterisations and amusing moments creating a feelgood factor based on a curious reverse psychology. As Morticia says, “ life is like a tightrope with a coffin at the other end” and we need to live before we die. Despite its dark themes of torture, poisoning, and macabre scenes of dead relatives, the result is a heartwarming fun tale of parental and sibling love.
The Principals are well established characters from the original Sixties TV series, and the 1991 film and its sequels, and any staging of this 2010 musical inevitably Invites comparisons to those previous incarnations. We know how Morticia, Gomez, Fester, Pugsley and Wednesday should look, sound and behave and that is part of the appeal of the title. Maidenhead Operatic Society is fortunate to attract performers who fit so well the physical look and gel together as a family unit to make the most of the comic opportunities of the situation.
The large ensemble of twenty-two, beautifully attired as the Adams family ancestors, are well used by the Director and Choreographer with many delightful touches including a wonderful “Tango De Amor”, an excellent “Full Disclosure” and a very creative and appropriate Bows to conclude the show. The result was a suitably quirky eccentric and amusing musical entertainment , well-acted, delightfully costumed and with a very clear sound mix that together created an excellent show.
