A Hitchcock film, then a book by John Buchan, and finally a play adapted by Patrick Barlow this famous play always brings the comment what are ….. the 39 steps ?
Well most know they are a set of steps to the sea in Broadstairs Kent, where John Buchan wrote his book and when his Daughter counted the steps and said the words that named the book! Also of course the spy code name for the plot surrounding the book.
The ingenuous way this play was so well directed, maximised the comedy and the special moves and effects enhanced every scene! Credit goes to all the actors for their spot on timing and incredible stage work, working together and miraculously avoiding each other in the swift action.
Experienced actor Adrian Bevan really excelled as Richard Hanney and it was a perfect pairing and great chemistry with the talented Becky Townsend always so watchable on stage as Annabella Schmidt the love interest and other parts she played. They both showed energy for these roles and their diction was outstanding. How they kept their faces straight showed their strong control in this mad crazy play!!
All the cast were excellent and so versatile in their interpretations. David Harris great stage presence as ever, along with Arturo Sanchez Garcia as a fantastic Mr Memory. Steve Banner as an outstanding hilarious Scot, John McTyte and Prof Jordan Hamish Sperring First Clown and Jane Rogers Second Clown played brilliant parts and were hilarious!! Kate Russell excelled as Mrs Jordan.
All the other roles including Tony Wells as a convincing Inspector! enhanced scenes, and created what can only be called outrageous fun!!
Thank you OCT for your kind invitation and warm welcome from Judith Rossiter, I look forward to your next performance.
