John Buchan’s The Thirty Nine Steps has always been a great favourite of mine with all the thrills and spills you could wish for but I must admit that when I heard of the black box version, I did just wonder what was going to happen! However, from the very beginning of this production I was extremely entertained for the whole evening. Although it was quite different from any other production I have seen, in no way did it detract from the story and also added such original humour.
Before we come to the cast, many congratulations are in order for all the work that had been done backstage with set construction, props, sound, lighting and costume, without which nothing would have worked.
The cast were outstanding with Michael Bale playing Richard Hannay with great style and verve, together with Wendy Stubbs as Annabella, Pamela and Margaret – excellent performances in all her characters.
Then we come to the four Clowns who played so many different parts between them. Zara Sears, Jessica Hack, Tracy Felstead and Emma Pierssene made all these parts come alive with aplomb and great activity!
Everyone in the cast used their acting skills to the utmost and all must be congratulated for their energy and ability to keep us all extremely entertained.
Director Charisse Goddard was indeed brave to take on this challenge but she, with the help of Production Assistant Warren Goddard should be very proud of the result.
Many thanks to the whole company for bringing this challenging play to the stage.
