A SUPERB performance by Zoe Clarkson in the title role was undoubtedly the highlight of Huddersfield Light Opera Company's production of Sweet Charity at the Lawrence Batley Theatre.
Zoe perfectly captured the essence of the optimistic, yet luckless character of dance hall hostess Charity Hope Valentine, and the outpouring of sympathy from the audience was almost tangible at the finale, when yet again her hopes of everlasting love was thwarted once more.
Although virtually a one-woman show, Zoe had terrific support from both Dom Moccia as Vittorio Vidal and Martin Stead as Oscar Lindquist who excell as her two leading men.
Experienced hand Neil Broadbent pops up briefly as Daddy Brubeck to deliver a rousing Rhythm of Life, while Louisa Lefevre and Ella Midgley add further colour as two of Charity's dance hall cuties.
The cast is completed by another pair of seasoned performers in Robin Walsh as Herman and Sharon Whitehead as Ursula March.
Congratulations must also go to producer Paul Bennett and choreographer Pam Strickland for a thoroughly entertaining show, while Chris Brearley's should be complimented on some brilliant lighting and staging effects.
The orchestra under MD Ian Abbott lent much to the production, although the  horns were a touch out of sync at times, but nevertheless it was an enjoyable evening in the company of a talented society.
