Sweet Charity with book by Neil Simon, music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields, has lots of well known musical numbers, first made famous in the film by Bob Fosse in 1969 with his dance stylings.

This is a new home for Waterside having to move from the theatre into Noadswood School. Being a school stage has a few problems for the group with limited wing space and lighting but they coped very well and this did not distract from the overall enjoyment of the show. The set was simple but elective; the costumes are very colourful and just right for the show. I really like the ‘Rhythm of Life’ number. Ian Peters is the Musical Director and the orchestra has a great sound and is well balanced.

The Director Gwen Moulster has a great cast with this production, and the dancing is in the capable hands of Bethany Gower.

Viki Sarker plays the lead, Charity Hope Valentine, a dance hall hostess who wants more for her life. She has a nice singing voice, great facial expressions, that help tell the story of her ever changing life, and she is very believable and works well with all the other characters.

Christopher Wortley plays Oscar Lindquist her fiancé, I liked the lift scene which was very funny. Other notable characters are Steven Moulster who plays both Vittorio Vidal the famous actor & Daddy Brubeck leader of the Rhythm of life Church, Dean Attard is Herman the dance hall owner and Charity’s boss. Nicola Duncombe as Helen & Pam Shaw as Nickie are charity’s best friends both play their parts well and I liked ‘Baby Dream your Dream’.

The entire chorus work well and everyone looks like they are having fun which comes over. Well done to you all.
