I am always a little apprehensive when an amateur company invites me to a show and I see it's Sondheim. I love Sondheim, I've appeared in Sondheim musicals, I've met Sondheim! His musicals are not easy to successfully pull off. My apprehension was allayed with this production.
There was a good house and the audience were very appreciative of the talent on the stage. The set was excellent and the technical team superb. The ensemble was strong and their focus on stage was good with a very good chorus sound.
The principals were good and mention must go to Richard Lee Thomas in the title role who gave an excellent performance both vocally and in his acting ability, Kyle James as a suitably naive young Tobias and Laura Martin as the angelic Johanna. Jessica Symmons gave a wonderful performance as Lucy, Greg Drummer was a great Pirelli, Keith Milward a suitably vile Bamford and Wayne Durston was a convincing Judge Turpin.
There were two performances worthy of very special mention and I must congratulate Zoe Richardson for a fabulous performance of Mrs Lovett and James Price as an outstanding Anthony, with a great voice and perfect characterisation.
Well done on a very enjoyable performance.
