Written around the music of the famous Scottish twins, The Proclaimers,  this is a show that deserves greater attention. From the opening chorus of ‘squaddies’, the broad Scottish accents never faltered. Appropriate scenes were projected onto three large screens throughout the show and great attention to detail was evident in props. Lighting was effective and Sound good. Costumes were mostly authentic.

The plot followed the highs and lows of two soldiers returning from Afghanistan. Michael Drake (Ally ) gave an emotional performance while Jessica Treacy (Lizzie) portrayed an independent figure with her eye on far horizons. Yvonne was sensitively played by Megan McGarry. She was introduced to Davy (Stuart Anderson) at a wonderfully rowdy pub scene – “It’s over and done with”. Megan, Jessica, Stuart and Michael all did full justice to their leading roles. As Lizzie and Davy’s parents, Rab and Jeannie, Cameron Mack and Blathnaid McCaughley were very well cast. They gave heart-warming performances when their world was rocked by long-past revelations and sudden illness. Jeannie’s gentle rendition of “Sunshine on Leith” at her husband’s hospital bedside was particularly beautiful. Minor principal roles were all well covered.

Jillian Liggett’s choreography was well rehearsed and original. The Finale “500 Miles” left everyone on a “high” after the somewhat sombre second act. Ian Milford’s 8 piece orchestra gave an assured performance. Singing was impressive – both choral and solo – with some lovely harmonies. As Director, Ian’s interpretation of this vibrant show gave the audience a great evening of theatre – making us laugh and cry in equal measure.
