This was an ambitious choice for any society to tackle, but Cleckheaton & Spenborough rose to the challenge and presented an excellent production. Although the society had many headaches along the way, especially losing their leading man with less than three weeks before their production, it turned out to be the best show they have ever staged.
The very experienced Rick White gave an absolutely flawless and stunning performance as the unsuccessful screen writer Joe Gillis. Angela Wheeler Buffham delivered a perfectly consummate performance as Norma Desmond as she explored the madness of a faded Hollywood movie legend. The interpretation of her two big numbers "With One Look" and "As If We Never Said Goodbye" were performed with panache and style. The experienced cast also included Leon Waksberg as Max Von Mayerling, Norma's first husband turned butler, and Abbi Sampson as Betty Schaefer who is Joe's love interest.
The chorus worked hard, all the numbers were slick and well presented. Norma Desmond's beautiful costumes (Ian Stead) were perfect for the era. The set looked good with the essential staircase, which added depth to the small stage, and the props were moved quickly and efficiently.
My sincere congratulations to the cast and Director Michael Kirby on a sduperb evenings entertainment.
