On what was a very warm summer evening it was indeed a pleasure to visit The Spire Poole, with its lovely Airconditioning, for , The Poole and Parkstone Players and Singers, annual “Summer Cocktail.”

It followed their usual format, The Players , Directed by Chris Roberts and Clare l’Anson, opened each half with three playlets. The Singers, Directed by Jane McDouall,  followed with a fine selection of choral numbers

As expected each of the playlets was performed to a high standard with excellent delivery which brought  a plenty of laughter from the audience.  I  thought that  Barbara Bone in one hander  “ The Duchess of Argyle” gave the outstanding performance of the evening.  However, probably the audience favourite was the fabulous  comedy“ Dinner For One” .Chris Burdon was  absolutely superb as James the drunken Butler.  I have always enjoyed this old Yorkshire comedy sketch since I first saw a short film of this Freddy Frinton classic over forty years ago in Germany, where it is traditionally shown on television every New Years Eve.

The Singers, accompanied by Carol Elliott, finished each half with five wonderful songs. Each one was exquisite in its own right. We were treated to a fine example of well-balanced harmony singing, which created a fabulous sound, that  at times made the hairs on my arms stand on end. A couple of the songs were very light hearted and delivered with great fun.

It was yet another excellent evening of entertainment  from  this very talented  company. My congratulations go to all concerned.
