Wellington Operatic Society decided to yet again take the challenge of undertaking a musical rarely performed by an Amateur Society ‘Sugar’ based on the well-known movie released in 1959 ‘ Some Like It Hot’ for its main production of 2016. The movie starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon was a smash hit so casting needed to be (excuse the pun) hot, Susan and Hilary were blessed with two strong chaps to play the accidental cross dressing Joe and Jerry. This highly experienced pairing steered the show, both have excellent comic timing and great vocals….and looking rather cute in frocks so that was just dandy. But, putting the icing on the perfect casting cake and discovering her dream part was the sweet ’Sugar Kane’ this young lady has grown in confidence, panache and style over the years and this part was made for her, vocally and physically she portrayed the vulnerable wanna-be starlet to perfection. The Society Sycopaters led by Sweet Sue sashed and sang with style. Sir Osgood Fielding also caught the eye with his light step and great voice as he pursued his dream girl ‘Jerry’ ….this caused much hilarity. Choreography worked well for the company and everyone had a moment to shine which was lovely.
Visually the set created by Kevin Stratton functioned well and the fake proscenium projections created a new dimension to the Wellesley stage. Costumes were appropriate and colour matched which worked with the style Susan wished to purvey. A fun packed evening with all the right ingredients….Well done Wellington.
