Almost everyone knows and also remembers the iconic film Some like it Hot , but the musical version cannot be advertised as such , I was surprised that STC had chosen to perform Sugar , it makes a welcome change from the usual shows as many theatre goers , myself included would not have seen it before .
The story line replicates the film ,With new comer James Gough playing Jerry /Daphne , who is possibly a star in the making , I actually still can’t believe it was his debut .What a fantastic performance ,I understand he continued to steal the show every night .Together with his sidekick talented Ian Page who ‘s multiple characterisation’s playing Joe/Josephine and the millionaire playboy were all three superb.
The directors , musical director and choreographer all pulled together to create a high standard entertaining evening with some very different production touches .Steve Hayes playing Spats Palazzo the boss of the mob and the men in the “Tear the Town Apart “ number was innovative genius .
Unfortunately for the well cast production the large scenery and very noisy, awkward set changes distracted the audience on occasion from the overall pace, I felt this was such a pity as these elements were totally out of their control.
Super costumes and some great cameo roles added the finishing touches the audience left the theatre voicing very positive feedback and I really enjoyed the evening, well done.
