Colwyn Abbey Players previously performed this piece in 2007 when the Company celebrated their 60th Anniversary. Since then, the Company has brought to our attention a broad spectrum of drama for us to enjoy in the North Wales area. It was great to see them perform Stepping Out, being their first production in two years in Theatr Colwyn since the pandemic.
The set was adequate and the Director took full advantage of the space available. The tap dance music between scenes was cleverly chosen and costumes and props were appropriate.
The cast of ten characters worked hard but sometimes they did not quite ‘gel’ together. There were some good characterisations including Shirley Betts as the long suffering complaining piano accompanist, Mrs Fraser, (Glenda). Vera, a new comer to the class played by Karen Ann Jones, gave us an excellent portrayal of this over the top enthusiastic character who constantly wanted to be in the front of the class. Anne Marie Munro demonstrated her stagecraft as Mavis, the tap dancing teacher and treated us to an excellent vocal solo at the end of Act 2.
The piece ended with a glitzy tap routine by all the cast signifying the group had reached their goal. On the down side, I think some members of the cast needed more voice projection, and one two extra rehearsals would have been an advantage. Nevertheless an enjoyable evening from an enthusiastic group. Thank you so much for your invitation and I look forward to your next production.
