The whole company entered into this production enthusiastically, supported by a good orchestra. The show opened with the Seabee's performing a shortened version of "Bloody Mary" with fast, slick choreography that set the scene for the whole of the evening. They had attractive settings with good lighting and easily moveable scenery. With sixteen scene changes the stage crew worked very hard helping the show to flow along. This show has a wonderful score and is set in the South Seas during the Second World War. I particularly liked the way the mountains of Bali Ha'i were projected on the back cloth and the sightings of Emile De Becque (Richard Aldham) and Lt. Joseph Cable (Richard Shilnleton) in combat gear, on the Island of Marie Louise. Good strong singing from all the principals, Emile displayed his vast experience with "This Nearly Was Mine" and Nellie Forbush (Phillippa Johnstone) excelled in her "Gonna Wash That Man Right Out-a My Hair", backed by the nurses (nearly one for each marine). Bloody Mary (Rachel Warlop) was a joy to watch and listen to. Bags of comedy from Luther Billis, and good character portrayals from the Officers. Delightful children and you could hear every word,. Girls, leg tan was the order of the day in the 1940's not shinny tights, especially with shorts. It was a long show but the audience did not seem to notice, a well balanced and most enjoyable evening.
