The full chorus of adults and junior members got the show off to a bright start with ‘Lullaby of Broadway’ and a most entertaining evening of well known songs from the musicals took off. The Junior Chorus’s ‘It’s A Hard Knock Life’ showed a few signs of first night nerves but these soon disappeared as confidence developed as did the big smiles. The ‘’Oliver Medley’ was lively and animated.
‘Do You Hear The People Sing' started very well with strong solo performances and the adult company sang with gusto. Amy Hogg is a natural performer and was a convincing Ado Annie with her ‘Can’t Say No’. Gill Sullivan and Melanie Smith blended well in their rendition of ‘I Know Him So Well’ The first half finished on a real high with the full chorus relaxed and loving every minute of ‘Life With You’ and ‘Don’t Stop Believing.’
The focus of the evening was on fun and the second half of the programme was indeed full of fun. Head squares and pigtails took us to Austria for ‘The Lonely Goatherd’ and ‘So Long Farewell’ from the same musical was endearing. More hats and feather boas were used in an amusing version of ‘I Am What I Am’ with Michelle Page and Sarah Murphy while the adult chorus did a real send up of ‘Big Spender’
There were also some more serious moments in this half namely ‘Castle on a Cloud’ very sweetly sung by Fynn Donaldson and a captivating performance of ‘What If’ beautifully sung by Caty Kerr accompanying herself on the guitar.
Of course if you want to get an audience going you can’t go wrong with a medley from ‘Mama Mia’ which was enjoyed by all on and off stage, the audience determined to join in at times.
The evening concluded in a rousing manner with ‘Rhythm of the Night’ and finally ‘Oklahoma’. The company played to a full house who demanded an encore of ‘Rhythm of the Night’ which almost developed into an on stage party! I have to say a special well done to the one and only boy in the cast.
It was evident that everyone on stage was enjoying themselves as was the capacity audience. It is so heartening to see the local community supporting their amateur company. I believe the Saturday performance was also a sell out.
Thank you Forth Dimension for a most enjoyable evening of well chosen numbers in ‘Sound of the Musicals.’
