What better way to spend a warm summer’s evening than to be entertained by this delightfully eclectic mix of music? Downland Singers took us on a tour of the seasons of the year with pieces specially chosen to reflect the character of each season. This was the first time I had sampled this long-established group’s work and I was not disappointed.
The music presented ranged in date from the sixteenth century to the present day; in mood from the serious to the romantic and light-hearted; and in origin from classical and opera to musical theatre and contemporary rock. You would think that such different pieces of music might jar when placed side by side, but they were all so well arranged, by Musical Director Avril Pinkney, that they blended smoothly together and none felt out of place.
The choral and solo voices were a delight to listen to. The balance between male and female voices was just right and the diction and delivery were precise and clear. It was essentially an ensemble piece but a few numbers deserve a special mention. Sue McClory and Yvette Welsh gave us a most amusing version of The Flower Duet from Lakme, as performed by Air Stewardesses; Tim Coles sang the perennial favourite Witchcraft beautifully, and Roger Rixon made us all laugh with the Muckspreader song, with some help from the audience! Last but not least, Arthur Pinkney really impressed me with his drum accompaniment to the chorus singing ELO’s Mr Blue Sky. Credit must also go to Chris Hyson, who worked so hard at the piano keyboard in very warm conditions, providing excellent support for the singers.
Downland Singers’ friendly, welcoming and informal atmosphere together with strong direction and good singing resulted in a thoroughly enjoyable evening for everyone. Well done!
