On a cold night in a not so warm venue this panto certainly warmed us up. It was on a firm base to start with as the script, I thought, was strong which gave the cast a full rein for their performances. There were, therefore, some very good presentations of the traditional characters led by Ian Thompson as his usual, funny, Dame Edna, beautifully costumed as ever. However, he wasn’t alone and I was very happy with how Heather Embleton and Olivia Thompson portrayed Snow White and Prince Ferdinand respectively. They were joined by Jake Baines (Scribbles) and George Coubrough (Chuckles) and these young actors grow with each production. Some of Jake’s timing was excellent and he obviously listens well.
The supporting cast included Phil Wilson as Quill and Pauline Fallon as the nasty Queen Avarice, Josh Muir (Slurp) and Kirsty Harrison (Fairy Good Fortune). However, having said that the script was strong, it seemed as if it may have been hard to learn to learn for some but, in panto, I suppose some ad libs are acceptable! Who said “Oh no they’re not”!
It’s lovely to be able to say that I was particularly impressed with the seven Dwarfs, played by some very promising young members so, on this occasion, I’ll give them all a mention – Zak White, Charlotte Thomas, Freya Tudor, Edward Jordan, Nathaniel White, Daniel Prescott and Zoe Clark. I look forward to seeing them grow.
There were plenty of songs, kept short, good choreography and costumes as is normal here together with an effective set and lighting.
The most important thing perhaps is that everyone went home happy.
