Firstly, thank you for the generous welcome shown to Ann and me, that we always get from Axminster Drama Club; it is much appreciated.
This pantomime was written by the prolific and very well known in panto circles, Alan Frayn, and Axminster Drama Club put on a good interpretation.
It was a traditional family panto, something for all generations to relate to. The sets were beautifully done with wonderful detail, especially inside the cottage. Audiences have come to expect excellent sets from this company, and they are very fortunate to have skilful artists with great vision which certainly showed in this panto!
Snow White looked every inch the part dressed in traditional colours of blue and yellow in her first appearance, the Prince looked charming as the principal boy and both the Prince and Snow White sang beautifully in their duet.
Queen Avarice did the “baddy” with great skill and enthusiasm and the “goody” Fairy Fortune looked good and performed well, if a little hurried with the dialogue at times. The traditional Mirror was well done and brought some character to the small but important part.
Edna was the archetypal Dame, risqué and comical and Chuckles had what it took for the part. Mrs Quill was a superefficient contrast to the chaos surrounding her, and Scribbles timed her very amusing lines with precision, and this together with her facial expressions served to make the part her own.
Merlin did a wonderful characterization as did the slimy creepy Slurp.
The Dwarfs were very effective and worked well as a team while never losing their individual characterisations, excellent in such young performers.
The chorus backed the main roles well and singing and dancing with great effect.
The costumes were colourful and along with good choices of music, effective lighting and an enthusiastic cast made a good family pantomime greatly enjoyed by an appreciative audience.
Axminster is fortunate to have such talent and a supportive audience keeping the panto tradition alive and well year by year.
Jack Price is to be congratulated along with the rest of the Team (scenery, costumes, front of house, chaperones and all with any input into the show.) A lot of work goes into it, so well done one and all.
I am looking forward to the next one …. Oh yes I am…
