As always it was a pleasure to join the audience at the Dolman Theatre, where Newport Pantomime Society were filling the auditorium for their production of Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. Always a very popular pantomime, the audience laughed and sang, cheered and booed with gusto, always encouraged by a very interactive cast.
Jessica Jones as Prince William, gave a classic performance, strutting in true thigh slapping style. With strong vocals and clear delivery, it all made for a very professional performance.
Megan Norris as Snow White, very much looked the part and gave a lovely performance with a soft and gentle characterisation.
Queen Secretia who was to be played by Liz Keetch, required a last-minute change due to illness and was very successfully portrayed by Laura Bassett, using throughout a well concealed script. I must congratulate Laura for the flawless delivery of the script and her ability in maintaining the character of the very wicked Queen and the integrity of the pantomime story. All songs related to this character were sang offstage, were very clear and did not detract from the overall performance. Very well done.
Billy Moorcroft as Muddles entertained us all with characteristic comedy style and comic lines, encouraging the audience to participate and join in with the panto spirit. Very well done.
Lee Rose Walsh gave us the Magic of the Mirror, in glittering robes and lines to rhyme. A walking talking mirror giving real expression was a very imaginative way to show the relationship between the Mirror and the Queen. Performed in true style. Well done.
George Rees as Nurse Nora the Panto Dame, clearly stole the stage at every entrance. Great comic timing, sassy and glamorous. A character to remember, that even a technical sound failure could not deter. The performance went on. A real trouper well played.
My congratulations to the backbone of the Panto Title and the performance; The Seven Dwarfs. Gareth Brenton [Ian] Ffion Bassett [Lurgy] Lisa Jones [Farty] Niamh Britton[Smiley] George Moorcroft [Pop] Evan Brenton [Snoozy] Gerald Needs [Grouchy] Well done to you all on the very individual characterisations.
The success of any pantomime greatly depends on the energy and appearance of the cast and the support of the crowd scenes so enjoyed by the audience. I must congratulate the whole cast and especially The Defying Gravity Academy for the changing scenes and excellent movement throughout the whole show. My congratulations to your Choreographer Emma Anderson on the dance routines and movement, that truly enhanced the whole performance.
In any show there can be unforeseen problems, whether it be technical issues or personal illness. It is the determination of the cast and backstage support working together that will make for a successful ending.
My congratulations to you all.
