The Phoenix Theatre in Ton Pentre played host to Rhondda Theatre Group’s production of ‘Snow White’.  This was a traditional pantomime giving performers of all ages a chance to shine.

The society used projections to create backdrops for the majority of the scenes, with the occasional cloth brought in, along with some props for dressing.  The projections were of an excellent standard, however occasionally they did appear to wobble, as if the projector was being knocked, which was a shame.  Some technical issues with microphones made dialogue and singing difficult to hear at times.  Lighting was well used and effective.  Costumes were colourful and appropriate for each cast member.

I have seen a few of this society’s productions so far and what I really like about them is their willingness to promote younger cast members from within the group.  This production was no different with several of the leading players aged 18 and under.  One such person was Katie Young, who played Snow White.  Katie gave a lovely performance, showcasing excellent vocals and developing a good character throughout the production.

Prince Frederick was played by Holly Melton who did a good job.  She sang nicely and built a lovely rapport with Snow White.

Kathryn Richards was suitably evil as Queen Grimelza.  She certainly played up to the audience who happily joined in with the customary boos and hisses that every pantomime villain loves.  Well done.

The seven dwarfs, played by younger members of the company, were excellent.  Full of character, lots of energy and great singing and dancing.  Well done to Tayah Jones, Daisy Luckwell, Heidi Davies, Hannah Wilson, Riva, Orryn Luu-Jones and Caitlin Bevan!

No pantomime would be complete without a dame.  Garry Sage was Dolly Dumpling in this production and didn’t he enjoy himself!  Garry gave an excellent performance.  He was funny and engaging and worked well with the onstage cast, as well as the audience.  Well done Garry.

Other named characters all gave good performances throughout the production.

The ensemble should be congratulated for excellent vocals and slick performance of choreography.  It was lovely to see so many smiling faces amongst the ensemble.  Well done everyone.

An enjoyable evening, full of laughter and good music.  Well done everyone.
