PLEASE NOTE:
Any observation made by the reviewer can only be based on what he sees at the performance in
question. The reviewer may have received information in advance of the performance, and it is
inevitable that his assessment will be effected by that knowledge.
The N.O.D.A. Representative’s intention is to give an objective critique of the overall production and in
particular the performance viewed. It should be remembered that any review of this nature can only
be objective as far as the techniques used during the performance observed. Any criticisms
expressed may not have been valid at other performances, and are only made to encourage higher
standards in Amateur Theatre.
It is hoped that the audience’s appreciation of your efforts will have given everyone a lift and
encouraged you to greater achievements in the future and that the observations made by the reviewer
will prove helpful in improving future productions.
This was the first Pantomime at a new venue for this group and I was impressed by
how much energy had been caused by the move. Everyone was actually enjoying
their time there and as this venue was more centrally placed in Bath the audience
numbers were good. So I looked forward to my visit. My thanks go to all those who
made my guest and I so welcome.
When you see each scene unfold beautifully and you realise that the scenery and
costumes are all made by the team then you just know how much thought and hard
work went into that part of the show. Every scene looked great. I loved some of the
scenes where the costumes co-ordinated with the scenery colours. There was plenty
of front tab usage as the scenery changes were made quietly behind stage. Mostly
songs to move the action along and supported by live keyboard, drums and some
recorded tracks. Scenery was impressive and colourful and made full use of the
deep stage. Lighting was for the most part was unseen – a sign of great design. All
lead actors were wired for sound and we didn’t miss a word. My congratulations to
the sound and light team.
This version of Snow White kept close to the known story but with some very
different variations which I will not describe here as they were unique to the author.
But some good twists to the plot. The whole of this show was in very safe and sound
hands – except for one omission. As good as I believe the show was it lacked some
“Slapstick”. With a large number of young children in the audience and expected in
other sessions I would have liked to see something messy or wet or really silly! This
really was the only thing missing from a traditional Pantomime show. I’ve no doubt
there were reasons for not having slapstick but for me it was the only
disappointment.
One of the strengths of this group is the quality of the acting from all those on stage.
As much as I would like to mention everyone I will just mention the lead characters
but send my congratulations to all taking part with a special mention to those of very
young age, those of very old age and the new born baby who slept so well despite all
the noise and music! They grab them young in this group!
Tiger-lily who played an adorable Snow White. Loved your wonderful expressive face
and singing voice. Alex played by Sophie. Another good voice and good stage
presence. Well cast both.
Laurel and Hardy played by Beckie and Rachel. Dodgy ground here as I’m a devoted
L&H fan! Just loved the two of you working so well in a difficult job – being idiots
keeping the comedy and moving the story along.
James playing Nanny Nightingale and possibly the best dressed Dame in the West
Country. I lost count of the number of dress changes. I’m guesting he was new to the
role. I would ask him to have more confidence, slow down and punch the jokes as he
can be a great dame – just chose an easier call-out for the audience. Well done
Steve – buy the wardrobe mistress a drink in thanks!
Last but not least wonderful Vishnu. I last saw her as a goody two-shoes maid in a
who-dun-it. But tonight what a wonderful evil mean Queen. Just listen to all the
booing from the audience. How you enjoyed that part. Well done!
Thanks for a great evening’s entertainment Unity Players.
I look forward to the next show – whatever that may be!
Kind regards
Bob Allen. NODA SW district 14 Representative
