What a pleasant change to see something different rather than a traditional panto. St Paul’s Drama Group never fails to surprise me. They must have had so much fun rehearsing the Snow Queen and what a show it was!! Sam Digby and Mel Newman as Directors, Irene Gardiner as Musical Director and Becky Beaumont creating the movement - these ladies moulded this cast of enthusiastic St Paul’s members young and older around the small stage with ease. Snowdrop and Snow Queen were played by the directors and they bounced of one another as the good and bad characters; the Snow Queen was an exceptionally nasty piece of work. Nick Swain as Hans narrated well. Gerda, Kai, and Helmet (Lucy Sayer, Adam Wigmore and Sally Murthy) mixed love and comedy very well and had been well cast.. Lucy and Adam both had great vocal ranges. Sally, so funny with her dry humour, was perfect. In his usual style, Graham Lord excelled as Gran. The “Hippy” scene, lead by Derek Elmore, was costumed with thought and created a lot of energy on stage. Set and costumes were both workable and colourful. All the supporting roles were played with gusto and they added their own support to the leading actors. Sam, Mel, Irene, and Becky - ladies you successfully brought us, the ‘audience’, a great evening’s entertainment - not easy on such a small stage. It just goes to show when a cast has such talented leaders the cast will follow.
Thank you St Paul’s for giving me a different Panto…I wasn’t expecting that! I went home with a smile on my face.
