This Toby Bradford and Tina Webster script was an excellent choice for Chardstock’s 25th Panto. The opening moments introduced us to the three fairies Lilac, Lavender and Loopy (sorry Lupin….the running joke!). These three ladies were the main focus in many ways with Lupin causing much mirth with her ‘I can’t rhyme’ issues and expressive cheeky face. The usual concepts of panto were still evident even though this was an up to date panto offering, a young vibrant chorus who sang well and supported the principals admirably,(although a few more smiles would have added to their sparkle) a dame with interesting dress sense along with Harry the Jester who’s comic timing created the perfect foil and partner in comedy to Ms Slaptickle. A doting set of parents with a pretty daughter and a handsome prince to wake her with that magic kiss brought the romance to the proceedings. The principal pair were very young to take on such weighty roles but performed with grace and tenderness and with a little more confidence will be a formidable pair. The evil Deadly Nightshade and her henchwoman Snivel slimed their way through the piece with plenty of boos and hisses. The music, choreography, staging and technical elements were all supportive and unobtrusive and this made this enjoyably funny panto all the more engaging. Congratulations and happy 25th panto Chardstock.
