Sister Act the musical is based on the 1992 film with this Junior Production being a cut-down version of the original. It is great to see that junior versions of popular musicals are available as it gives youth groups the opportunity to perform some great musicals and to enjoy the experience of performing in such amazing shows.
There was certainly lots of talent in this cast who sang the big numbers and performed the dances brilliantly and with bags of energy and enthusiasm. The stand-out performance was from the young girl playing Deloris and she gave an amazingly mature performance with excellent vocals. She was very well supported by the rest of the cast who all gave strong performances.
The direction, musical direction and choreography was excellent, and it was clear that under the guidance of the production team, the young people were confident in their performances and loving being on stage. Working with this large cast of youngsters, Louise created a slick, funny and thoroughly entertaining show which was very well cast. The dialogue was good and clear throughout and there were some well-developed characterisations.
Sister Act is wonderful musical full of big musical numbers and lots of harmonies and this large company of nuns and the church choir brought the sound alive. It is a big sing, and the score can be challenging, but under the direction of Joseph, these young performers were in excellent voice and their rendition of all the songs and in particular, Sunday morning Fever, Raise your Voice and Take me to Heaven can only be described as absolutely joyous. The interesting choreography which was varied and fun contributed hugely to all the big Nun’s musical numbers. Ellen had worked hard with the cast on the routines which were high energy and colourful and I was pleased to see that the cast were smiling throughout and obviously enjoying themselves.
