For me the stars of this joyous show were the chorus of Nuns who exuded energy on every appearance. Named nuns each portrayed different characterisations. Those nuns who discarded their wimples sometimes to become backing singers, dancers, waitresses and hookers added to the atmosphere. Vincent Lynch, Rory Mullan, James Nangle and Michael Poole were well cast as bad guys Curtis, Joey, TJ and Pablo – the latter’s Spanish was particularly convincing.
David Keown was Doloris’ long-lost school friend “Sweaty” Eddie. He came alive in his song, complete with strip-change to Elvis! Unsurprisingly, there are not many male roles in Sister Act! Those who appeared as cop, Ernie, bar tender and Drag Queen slotted into the action easily. Playing MonsignorO’Hara, Geoff Coke was gradually drawn into the rhythm of the nuns’ new music. Judith O’Hare as Mother Superior maintained a rigid character throughout. Her dry one-liners were delivered with exasperation and a perfect accent! Emer McCaffrey played Doloris Von-Cartier, made famous by Whoopi Goldberg in the 1992 film. She portrayed the brash night-club singer with good comedy and vocals.
The set was basic black box with projections on a smallish centre-back screen. Props were trucked on but scene changes were rather slow. Lighting could have been a bit more adventurous. Costumes were very good – especially the variety of nun’s habits. The early part of the show was rather slow moving but really got going when the nuns appeared. Musically, the show was excellent under the direction of Peter Doherty and Vanessa’s choreography was energising. Deigh Reid directed a fun show - enjoyed by all.
