On our arrival we were greeted by a queue outside; great to see these days with falling audiences everywhere. “Bless Our Show” sang the sisters, and it certainly was. What a hard “Act” to follow. Congratulations to everyone involved in this show. An extremely uplifting show performed with energy throughout by all the performers and musicians. Musical Director (Elen Mair Roberts) and musicians were as one with the action providing the moods this show demands.
The set was quite minimal but used effectively by the directors Tracey Rawlinson and Michael Jones, inivitive direction of this talented cast.
The magnificent costumes were made by the costume team, Jan Williams, Phillip Main, Charlie Roberts and Sue Gibbons. The ‘seamless’ change of sweaty Eddie (Ross Wilson) from cop in his dreams was a credit to himself and the costumes. The ‘sisters’ appeared comfortable in their habits with a very effective change to white to perform for the ‘Pope’.
Sister Mary Clarence, as she became (Elen-Haf Taylor) was superb, her enthusiasm, singing and energy throughout, I am sure, inspired the cast and audience. Mother Superior (Alison Ravenscroft) had a beautiful contrasting voice and as ever, her authority inevitably fell under the spell of the upbeat music in the end.
Sister Mary Roberts (Lizzy Richards)and Sister Mary Patrick (Stephanie Cottam) played their two contrasting roles very convincingly, as did all of the sisters. They all obviously enjoyed the show enormously. Monsignor O’Hara (Gareth Lloyd) with his increasingly flamboyant cassocks had no problem accepting the changes in the convent and revelled in his part.
Of course, we must not forget the men in this show; gangsters led by Curtis Jackson (Simon Orton-Jones), altar boys, cops, all contributed to the story and gave real support to the inevitable conclusion of good conquering evil. I was overwhelmed indeed by the show, it was certainly worth queuing for and the buzz from the audience as they left said it all.
Congratulations again everyone, an excellent show.
