The set was simple but effective. There was a lovely stained glass window set into the curtain at the back of the stage which changed colour throughout the production and provided a lovely focal point for the Convent. Crosses on narrow drapes that were lowered onto the stage for the chase scene worked well and provided corridors and hiding places for the nuns and gangsters. Good use was also made of the side and central aisles in the auditorium to bring the audience into the action. Along with other items of furniture such as a desk and bed, the scenes were well set without taking up too much space. Costumes and lighting added greatly to the overall visual effect, despite the latter being a little blinding on occasion for the audience.
Dolores van Cartier (Emily) was superb. Her characterisation was entirely convincing and the vocal performance was outstanding throughout, full of tone, emotion and quality. She really shone in every scene she was in and had real stage presence. She was also well supported in the nightclub scenes by her backing singers (Christine and Olivia).
This show is all about the nuns, as the title suggests, and the whole group worked well together as an ensemble, performing with good energy, enthusiasm and fun. Minor hiccups on the first night with props did not distract them and they quickly adapted to cover up the issue. However, I must pick out a few for special mention.
Mother Superior (Victoria) was quietly assured with pleasing vocals and good comic timing for her more cutting remarks to Delores.
Sister Mary Roberts (Jenny) was delightful as the timid nun who learns to find her voice. She gave a heartfelt rendition of ‘The Life I Never Led’.
Sister Mary Lazarus (Julia) really went for it with her unexpected but hilarious rapping. She had great characterisation, which really bought this comical nun to life.
Sister Mary Patrick (Corinne-Anne) also gave us bags of character as this cheeky and exuberant nun.
There is not a huge amount for the men, but they made the most of their moments.Eddie Souther (Dave) was the perfect lovable policeman and had a calm and kind presence. He also had a lovely soulful voice which worked really well for ‘I Could Be That Guy’.
Curtis Jackson (Timothy) was suitably convincing as the menacing gangster and had a resonant, rich bass voice to match the character.
Joey, TJ and Pablo (Steve, Ian and Gary- Deane) provided much of the comedy. Their rendition of ‘Lady in the long black dress’ was a real crowd pleaser and I loved the moves, which had obviously taken a lot of hard work and rehearsal!
The band at the back of the stage, on an elevated level, produced a fabulous sound which was beautifully balanced with the singing. Choreography was well devised and rehearsed and just right for the varied abilities of the group. All in all this was a hugely enjoyable and well directed production; full of energy, character and entertaining performances. Very well done to the whole team.
