Sister Act is the heartwarming story of Deloris Van Cartier; would-be-singer and gangster’s moll who gets caught up in a murder and ends up being hidden in a convent with a “bunch of nuns”. It is a musical comedy with some great songs that have the audience smiling and rocking to the wonderful gospel music.
Hardly off stage, Deloris is the lynch pin for the whole show this is a huge part for any actress but is one of those parts which is on many a bucket list! All of the principals gave great performances full of character and singing with good tuning, expression and dynamics. Whilst this is a musical with a lot of strong female roles, the parts for men are also something to get your teeth into and we were treated to some grand performances form Surtis and his goods, sweaty Eddie and the Monsignor.
The chorus of nun’s are an integral part of the show, and this group certainly performed with energy and enthusiasm. I loved the transformation from the awful and unearthly sound into a heavenly chorus with some excellent numbers. It is very difficult to sing badly whilst keeping the tune recognisable as it can become just a cacophony of sound, so well done on sounding awful, but weirdly tuneful. In the big numbers, under the guidance of Deloris, the nun’s chorus were in good voice and a joy to listen to as they supported the principals with their beautiful harmonies.
