It is always  a pleasure to visit Port Talbot MT, however this time it was to a different venue as the Princess Royal Theatre is undergoing refurbishment. For this production the company Performed Sister Act at Ysgol Cwm Brombil. I was impressed with the venue and as usual had a lovely welcome from the society.

Sister Act the Musical is based on the movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and follows the story of nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier, who having witnessed a murder carried out by her lover is placed in a convent for safety.

It is a feel good musical with obviously many roles being taken by the female members of the company, the ensemble work was really good with some lovely harmonies achieved by M D Danni Gravell, with some nice pictures set by director Anthony Argyle.

I was very impressed with Sophie Bevan as Sister Mary Patrick and Gaynor Williams as Sister Mary Lazarus, both had great comedic timing in their roles. I loved the rap in “Raise your Voice”.

The role of Sister Mary Robert was played by Eleanor Williams and she gave a very believable performance of the young postulant, her solo of” The  Life I never Led” richly deserved the response it received from the appreciative audience. Congratulations Eleanor on a lovely performance.

Karen Myring took on the role of the Mother Superior, and from her first entrance commanded the role. Her timing was really good and I enjoyed her renditions of “Here Within these walls” and “I haven't got a Prayer”

Deloris was played by Nicole Hudson and it was hard to believe that this was Nicole’s first major role. I really liked her portrayal of the sassy nightclub singer who was won over by her Sisters. I particularly liked the dream sequence and her rendition of “Sister Act”. Well done Nicole.

Curtis was played with a lot of menace by Lee Bentley, and I think the good natured booing during the curtain call proved that it was well played as were the cheers where he got shot by officer Eddie Souther.

Sweaty Eddie marked the return to the stage for Thomas Rhys Murray, it was lovely to see him back performing again and he had a lovely singing voice and performed his numbers really well.

The roles of Pablo , TJ and Joey were taken by Alexander Williams, Logan Phillips and Ben Williams and they played them just right, well done with “Lady in the long Black Dress”.

Monsignor O’Hara was taken by Richard Loveday and nicely played ,I hope it was water in that flask, and I loved the costume for Sunday Morning Fever.

Everybody on stage seemed to be having fun and worked really well together and I’d like to thank David Roberts’ Pope Paul for his blessing.

On the whole it was another enjoyable evening spent with this talented society. Well done to all of the cast and crew and I look forward to joining you in 2026 for Bonnie and Clyde.
