Review – Sister Act
The show opens in the to Deloris (Tanya Pryor) singing Take Me To Heaven with power and polish, backed by her friends Tina (Deanna Crossley) and Michelle (Cerys Jones). The venue is owned by her mobster boyfriend Curtis Jackson (Daniel Mann) who is watching the audition with his henchmen Joey (Gareth Jones), TJ (Chris Littler-Moore), Pablo (David Rogers) and Ernie (JP Totham) a very funny team who played the comedy just right. I especially liked Lady in the Long Black Dress number.
Deloris then sees Vincent carry out a murder and goes to the police to report it where she meets her old schoolmate Eddie Souther played by Dan Jones. I have seen people wear two outfits at once but he managed a perfect triple change from uniform to suit and back to uniform.
The show then moves to the Convent where Eddie decides to hide Deloris with the cooperation of Monsignor O’Hara (Nigel Dixon) and Mother Superior Hannah Cochrane).
Sister Mary Robert (Jenny Nixon) shy but with the help of Deloris eventually finds her voice
Sister Mary Patrick (Natalie Higgins) enthusiastic
Sister Mary Lazarus (Louise Thatcher) deadpan and cantankerous
Sister Mary Martin-of-Tours (Sophie Holroyd) dreamy with moments of clarity
Sister Mary Theresa (Jackie Beverly) oldest but still packs a punch
Sister Mary Peter/Tina and Sister Mary Beckett/Michelle played the two roles each
And a Chorus of Nuns
The acting of all these roles complimented the characters they were playing if you were not told who was playing which nun you would know which they were.
The star of the show was undoubtedly Tanya Prior a super singer and actor with bags of personality.
The singing of all the numbers by the group was very good as was the choreography of the whole show was slick thanks to Musical Director Craig Smith Parkin and Choreographer Amanda Marsden.
The scene changing was very efficient led by Stage Manager Chris Dearden and crew. Lighting Adam Evans and Sound CS Technical. Wardrobe by Jane Griffin was authentic and given the number of cast must have been quite a task.
I thought the whole show was joyous and came away feeling uplifted.
Congratulations to Director Chris Hall
Well done to all concerned for an excellent show.
