The requirement to mix situation humour with panto style chases and good music is always a tricky mix, but here it was well balanced, while the singing and dialogue were clear and well delivered. The staging created a very interesting space, with thrust walkways down each side and across the front, and the orchestra pit in the centre. Scenery was mostly replaced by projected images on the backcloth with minimal stage furniture, which worked well here. The action around the confessional was excellent. The music was very well played and added enormous energy to the performance. The sound was well judged and on cue, while the lighting and scenery projections were excellent.
The costumes had a few hiccups on the night I was there. However, the cast’s outfits were very good, with the nun’s reveal towards the end very well done. The cardinal and pope costumes looked highly authentic. Makeup and hair were excellent. However, it was the cast that brought this story to life! The singing by all, solos and chorus, was very good, even when occasionally struggling to be heard. Characterisations were excellent, especially Mother Superior and Monsignor O’Hara with the lovely Irish accent. The small group of nuns were very well played, led by Deloris/Donna, whose energy onstage was remarkable, while the full cast numbers were very well done.
All in all, this was a very well planned and devised production that was very well performed with a great sense of fun. The pace was excellent and well maintained. The action was convincing and the acting and singing very good throughout. Congratulations!
