Sister Act is a feel good and hilarious show with plenty of toe-tapping numbers and enough quick fire, witty dialogue to keep principals and chorus very busy! BOS rose to the occasion admirably and gave the appreciative audience a most enjoyable evening’s entertainment. This was an energetic and well-paced production with some very good performances from the principals with excellent support from a well-rehearsed ensemble many of whom appeared in a variety of characters - assorted night club clientele, a ‘homeless’ ensemble and Alter boys - to name but a few. The sheer enthusiasm of the entire cast was certainly very evident from the audience’s perspective. With strong direction and spot on musical direction this was a well-produced and thoroughly entertaining performance. The slick, lively and inventive ‘disco feel’ choreography was spot on and pitched at a suitable level which enabled all members of the ensemble to participate. There were always interesting ‘pictures’ to be seen and everyone knew exactly where they were supposed to be. The moves were performed confidently with everyone in perfect synchronisation when required to be so – and everyone was smiling!! It makes such a difference! The set and scene changes worked well although I felt that some of the changes could have been speeded up. In one instance this could have been achieved by setting as many items as possible (for example, the tables and benches for the refectory scene) behind the gauze and letting the cast finish setting the scene as part of the action as the gauze moved out.The night club and church interior sets were simple yet very effective. In the latter the stepped rostra leading to the Alter gave an interesting perspective and was well utilised in many of the dance routines as well as giving an interesting diversity of levels. The lighting effects used and the centrally positioned circular stained glass window were very striking. Many congratulations to all involved with the presentation and staging of this very good production. The reaction of the enthusiastic and seemingly full auditorium must pay tribute to everyone’s hard work and commitment! I heard many positive and complimentary comments as I made my way out at the conclusion of the performance.
