This certainly was a Divine Musical Comedy!  So much fun enacted by a cast who really knew what they were doing, giving their audiences a really good time.

It’s a great story with the night club singer Deloris Van Cartier witnessing a murder carried out by her boyfriend and then having to go into hiding.  Much to her initial alarm, she is sent to the local Convent  where she is by no means welcomed by the Mother Superior.  As the story goes on, she brings the Convent choir to life and is the means of saving the Convent from closure.

So on to the characters and characters they certainly were!  Dolores herself was played by Donna Bull, giving herself wholly into the part and using her acting and singing skills to the utmost.  Kate Long was the Mother Superior and Sister Mary Robert was played by Monique Loosemore and both these ladies also had outstanding acting abilities and voices.  They were all ably supported by Sister Mary Patrick (Darrelle Gray), Sister Mary Lazarus (Sue James) and the whole Nuns’ Chorus.  There were many upbeat numbers in the piece including great renditions of Take me to Heaven.

Steve Llewelyn played Monsignor O’Hara with aplomb and James Gibbs gave us Delores’ boyfriend Curtis in great style with TJ, Joey and Pablo (his most unlikely gangsters!) played by Jack Poulton, John Tester and Paul Christoff with panache – much laughter ensued whenever they appeared!  Jack Poulton gave a lovely performance as Eddie, the policeman, desperately trying to forget his nickname of Sweaty Eddie and doing all he could to save Dolores from what would be a dreadful fate if the gang caught up with her.  All other parts were played well and all singing and movement was excellent on the relatively small stage.

The set was ideal thanks to all the hard work of the set design, construction and decoration team and the costumes were just as they should be with the Nuns looking really glamourous with the lovely sparkly additions to their habits when performing their concerts.

The orchestra led by Russell Taylor although unseen gave extremely good value to the production. Many thanks to Director Tony Betts, Russell as MD, Choreographer Stuart Hall and all involved in this production.
