Sister Act, The Musical is based on the 1992 film of the same name. Deloris Van Cartier sees her gangster boyfriend Curtis Shank commit a murder, she goes to the police and is placed in the witness protection program. In a convent and disguised as a nun, she transforms the convent choir, breathing new life into the convent and finding a true sisterhood amongst the nuns.

Rachel Bosomworth led the show with a great portrayal of Deloris Van Cartier, confident and with great comic timing, her powerful voice filling the space beautifully. Eddie was well played by Mark Selleck. Curtis was suitably sinister and his sidekicks had developed some great comical characters and moments, especially in their song “Lady in The Long Black Dress” I particularly enjoyed Olly Brooks as TJ his characterisation choices were hilarious at times. We also had some great characterisations from all the other cast members, with most of the nuns demonstrating their individual characters well, and with some great individual moments from the principle nuns. Gemma Davis as the naïve Sister Mary Robert had a lovely tone to her voice. You could really tell that everyone on stage was loving being part of this joyous show. There were moments when diction could have been clearer, as some lines were lost, this could have been due to where I was sitting. I would also suggest more care when side stage as often cast were visible from where we sat, meaning I had a clear view of those fabulous final costumes before I should have.

Ably directed by Babs Harrison and assisted by Alison Cobb the staging and set was simple and effective, using the space well. The scene changes were very slick and the pace kept up throughout. The orchestra led by Bradley parker sounded great if a little loud at times but again this may have been due to my location. I enjoyed his costume touch for the final number. The lighting was well designed and appropriate. The costumes were “fabulous”.

The cast obviously had a great time performing this show which transferred to the audience, who seemed to enjoy themselves as the standing ovation at the end showed.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first show with you as Regional Rep and look forward to your future productions. Congratulations everyone.
