Adapted from the very popular film of 1992 starring Whoopi Goldberg, this stage musical has been just as popular, with its uplifting gospel music and comical mix of gangsters and nuns. The audience were enthusiastic about the performance ahead and were not disappointed. Direction and Choreography by Martine Burt had a good pace and energy throughout. The dance routines were very enjoyable and well-rehearsed and there was plenty of detail to keep the audience thoroughly entertained.
Deloris Van Cartier was a gutsy performance, which began perhaps a little too enthusiastically but soon settled into character so that her excellent voice could be appreciated.
Mother Superior was superb. She had the character perfectly and also had a beautiful singing voice. She was a joy to watch on stage in every one of her scenes and gave a really first rate performance, especially in her rendition of ‘I haven’t got a prayer’ which managed to be both comical and moving.
All of the nuns sang, moved and acted well and must be congratulated for their excellent performances; I especially loved the rapping!
Although this is a show that is very much for the female cast, the gentlemen of the group held their own in their various roles.
Eddie was very sensitively played with another excellent singing voice. ‘I could be that guy’ had us all rooting for him to get together with Deloris; very well done.
The set was simple but worked well and the stage crew did a good job of the various scene changes, moving quickly and without fuss. Costumes and makeup were just right for the 1970’s setting.
The lighting was also very good and, apart from the initial over amplification, the sound settled down to just the right level.
The band produced a very good sound, although a little loud at times, and the Musical Director had worked hard to produce a beautiful sound from the chorus singing; especially the Nuns who sounded wonderful.
This was a very enjoyable show which sent the audience out into the cold winter evening with a spring in their step. My congratulations to all involved.
