Based on the 1992 film of the same name, which tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, who when witnesses her big time crook and fancy man carry out murder, has to hide for her own safety in the unlikely location of a convent.
Tracey Coleman who played Deloris, gave a strong performance and sang her numbers very well. Audiences often have a preconceived expectation and this character is regularly played by an Afro – Caribbean actress. This was not the case with this production. Stephen Lurvey as Eddie gave a solid performance. Mother Superior was ably played by Carole Fletcher. Hannah Todd as Sister Mary Robert, Leanne Algeo as Sister Mary Patrick and the lady who stood in as Sister Mary Lazarus gave strong performances and evidently enjoyed performing these roles.
Curtis, the crook, played by Phil Bond gave a good performance and looked suitably powerful, ably surrounded by Alex Brent as Pablo, Dan Collier Roberts as TJ and Steve Lane as Joey gave strong comic performances, for me their rendition of ‘Lady in the long black dress’ stole the night. Monsignor O’Hara was in the capable hands of Chris Coleman and there were good performances from the Ensemble of Nuns, each one demonstrating a certain character from young to not so young.
The choreography for this show does not require a lot of complicated steps and high kicks, but it does require a great deal of movement, with a high level of energy and enthusiasm and RATS delivered this in abundance. The lighting was well done and provided the right atmosphere during many of the musical numbers. The set was excellent and RATS never fail to impress me with the sets created on such a small stage.
Director Carol Coleman had created a genuinely ‘feel good’ show and huge congratulations are in order. The small band of just 5 under the leadership of Matthew Hampson accompanied the cast well and enabled the cast to be heard when signing.
This production was of a high standard and it was a great to see an auditorium sold out. Congratulations to the entire company for putting this production together in just 10 weeks.
Congratulations RATS
