Sister Act

Based on the 1992 film of the same name, The Colstars gave the audience a night to remember, and certainly made “Sister Act” their own.

This was a top notch production. Every aspect nailed. The acting was believable, convincing and often very funny. Characters acting through song was a major plus and a clear indication of the hard hours the cast and “the creatives” put in during rehearsal.

There were some knock out performances from principal players, usually I don’t single anyone out but Rachel Stephens, Deborah James and Daniel Thomas were excellent, supported by a strong supporting cast and chorus. The chorus of Nuns who exuded energy on every appearance.

All the characters were well defined. This is so vital in a story where subtly is not requested. The dialogue was well presented with some excellent timing. The roles were well cast and every actor was totally into their own portrayal. This ensured the immediacy the show requires and kept the audience firmly on board.

Musical Direction by Nathan Jones was of a high standard, both solo and ensemble numbers. I am untutored in such musicial matters and all I am qualified to say on this point is that it was hugely enjoyable. This production directed by Derek Williams with choreography by Julie Griffiths was of a very high standard and it was a great joy to see an auditorium sold out.

The set and lighting provided by Scenic Hire (Cwmbran) and James Thomas complimented this production excellently. The costumes were provided by ACE Theatrical Costumiers were outstanding as always.

One criticism I have is that there seemed to be issues with some microphones which were intermittent and so part of the script was missed but having said that, myself and the audience loved this production and found ourselves on our feet way before the final number had finished.
