Warmly welcomed by the front of house, some of whom dressed in their nuns habits certainly set the tone for what was to become a very enjoyable show.

Sister Act is a well known story, based on the film of the same name, but without the recognisable tunes that the film uses. All the better for it. Alan Menken Music and Glenn Slater’s lyrics add humour, pathos and emotion.

The orchestra, 12 in number, set off at a brisk pace under the expert guidance of Nigel Finch and the sound was very good. Clear and crisp.

Lighting by James Gardner was effective and added to the overall piece and the sound by Pob Wyeth (raw sound), made sure that all could be heard in a theatre that can be traditionally difficult for sound. Very well done to both.

The show opened with a traditional Las Vegas gold backdrop in front of the black out curtains and we were introduced to Delores Von Cartier, played by Susanna Shaw, accompanied by Michelle and Tina (Jamie Jones and Eve Lethbridge) who delivered with good musicality and confidence. Susanna played the role with great aplomb, always clear diction, despite the American accent that was required. Very well done.

The four hoodlums, Curtis (Mike Allborough), Eddie (Louis Spencer), TJ (Luke Devlin) and Pablo (Kelan Pannell) all played their roles convincingly with some great comic timing, and Spanish accents. The last two (Luke and Kelan) I believe are products of Eastleigh's Junior Society, a real credit.

Mother Superior (Jacqui Beckingham) turned up (in front of effective Abbey scenery and back cloth) and you were immediately under no illusion who was in charge. She played with authority mixed with humour and emotion, a real stage presence.

A mention here also to the chorus of ladies (the nuns) who made a terrific noise and were well drilled by Director Lyn Butcher, vocally by Musical director Nigel Finch and choreographically (Kerry Butcher). Well done all.

Overall a really enjoyable evening and we all left humming the tunes. Looking forward already to The Mikado.
