The best way to describe Sister Act is dynamic, from the opening bars right through to the flashy finale. Taunton hit the road running with a powerful leading lady, whose confidence in the role and musical ability engaged the audience immediately. That being said it wasn’t all about Deloris, her ‘Sisters’ brought so much love to the stage it was infectious, Sister Mary Lazarus was perfectly captured, her cantankerous old school approach soon being transformed into a fabulously hip sister, she was joined by the joyous Sister Mary Patrick and sweet Sister Mary Robert who also made a huge impact on the productions success along with all their ‘convent family’. All these ladies were obviously having a ball and we were generously invited to join them on their fabulous journey. Keeping them all ‘nearly’ in check was Mother Superior, (having seen ‘The Sound of Music’ I hope you’re not getting type cast!), a joy to behold with a great rapport with the Monsignor, both gave thought to their performances as they balanced for the greater good of the sisters.
Out of the convent Eddie and his love for Deloris sang and performed with passion. Curtis and his boys caused ‘mild’ fear of the underground culture in which they operated. The boy’s performance of ‘Lady in the Long Black Dress’ was one of the many highlights of this production. The costumes and make-up were all suitable and quick changes worked well. The set from Proscenium Ltd was adequate but not as engaging or exciting as hoped for, along with the technical workings it set the scene simply and the cast brought the vibrancy.
This show has caused quite a stir in Taunton, it will be interesting to see if the October Sondheim offering of ‘Company’ will keep the audience coming back for more….I hope so!
