Thank you for inviting me to your production of the Hollywood classic “Singin’ in the Rain”. The musical based on the 1952 film takes place in Hollywood during the transition from silent movies to talking pictures. This all singing all dancing musical has some very well-known songs and is a real feel-good musical. It was great to see this cast of 27 youngsters ‘living’ the Hollywood dream together on stage. As a show, this was quite an undertaking, but this young cast did it with all the style and enthusiasm needed to re-create such an iconic piece.

The directors followed the style of the original show whilst adding their own vision. They used their experience of working with young people to bring out the best in this young cast who delivered a show full of excellent singing, dancing and characterisation. The principals had developed their characters brilliantly and all had strong vocals and sang with confidence supported by the live band. All of the Supporting and Minor-Principal roles were well played with each of the ensemble having lots to do. The choreography was good throughout with some lovely dance sequences, including “Singin’ in the Rain” with the large cast twirling large umbrellas whilst tap dancing. The dance routines were engaging, and the large cast had been well trained, with their movements energetic and well synchronised. The slapstick dance for “Make ‘em Laugh” was very effective with some lovely physicality.

Although, there were a few tech issues on the evening I was there, this show was all about the young people on stage and every one of them looked as though they had poured their heart and soul into this production and were giving it their all. They were a credit to themselves and their supporters and gave the audience a very entertaining evening.
