This youth theatre production of Shrek the Musical was an entertaining and well-received performance, clearly enjoyed by both audience and cast. The show demonstrated strong casting, confident performances, and a supportive creative structure that enabled a large young company to deliver a polished and cohesive production.

The principal performances were a particular highlight. The actor playing Shrek delivered a mature and well-judged portrayal, supported by strong and consistent vocals. Fiona brought charm, humour, and confidence to the role, with excellent comic timing and assured singing. Both leads demonstrated clear understanding of their characters, although a slightly stronger emotional connection between them would have further elevated their shared scenes.

Donkey stood out for energy and confidence, maintaining a lively presence throughout, while avoiding overplaying the role. Lord Farquaad was impressively executed, both physically and vocally, with strong characterisation sustained despite the physical demands of the role. Dragon delivered one of the strongest vocal performances of the production, with a clear and controlled singing style.

Supporting roles across the company were handled with care and consistency. Ensemble members maintained character well, interacted naturally, and contributed positively to the overall storytelling. Several performers demonstrated notable versatility by taking on multiple roles, all delivered with confidence and clarity. The puppeteering team, in particular, showed impressive coordination and focus in a technically demanding aspect of the show.

From a creative perspective, the production was well organised and thoughtfully delivered. Direction ensured that the cast appeared confident, well-rehearsed, and fully engaged, particularly impressive given the size and age range of the company. There were minor moments where staging could be refined—most notably in one key scene transition—and some creative choices that did not fully land, but these did not detract significantly from the overall success of the production.

Musically, the show was strong, with confident solo performances and a well-supported ensemble sound. At times, balance could be adjusted to ensure individuals blended more effectively within group numbers. Choreography was well adapted to the constraints of a smaller stage, resulting in simple yet effective routines that the cast executed with confidence.

Production elements were of a high standard throughout. Costumes were well designed and appropriate, hair and make-up supported clear characterisation, and props and set pieces were used effectively to support the storytelling without cluttering the stage. Technical aspects, including lighting and sound, were well controlled, ensuring clarity and focus throughout. Scene changes were generally smooth, contributing to the overall flow of the performance.

Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable production, showcasing a great deal of young talent supported by a dedicated and capable creative team. The company should be proud of what they achieved, and with continued development—particularly in deepening character relationships and refining certain staging choices—future productions are likely to be even stronger.
