It was lovely to be invited back to this great venue for this production of Shrek Jr performed by New Heights. This is a large venue for a youth production but Rebecca and team are to be congratulated on the way they set up the stage as the whole production worked really well.
As with most junior productions the show was double cast so I can only comment on the team performing on the Saturday Afternoon . It was however lovely seeing the alternate characters also joining in with the ensemble.
This show is a popular one and most people know the story of the lovable ogre and his quest to reclaim his home.
There are a great number of roles in this show making it a good choice for a youth production. All of Rebecca’s students seemed to be having the time of their lives on stage which was great to see.
The lead role of Shrek was taken by Jacob Treseder and I was very impressed with his performance. Jacob kept the characterisation and accent really well. It really was a standout performance by this young actor, who really shone in this role, well done.
Princess Fiona was played by Bethan Guard , this was another strong performance by this young actress who also had a lovely relationship with Jacob which worked really well, “I think i got you beat” worked really well.
The role of Donkey was taken by Ronne Jones which was played in a very energetic and excitable way.
Joey McEwan played Lord Farquaad, the baddie of restricted height. To play a role constantly on your knees is not easy at all well done.
The Dragon/ Storyteller was played by Emily Watkins who gave a very good vocal performance in this role.
Ava Kimber took on the role of the other Storyteller and Oscar Kimber the Captain of the Guard well done both.
There were some lovely vocals and harmonies by this group of young actors , and the creative team are to be congratulated.
I especially enjoyed “I know its today” with lovely performances by Maisie Jones and Tybie Rutterford alongside Bethan as Young and Teen Fiona , well done girls.
Thank you Rebecca for a lovely welcome and I look forward to your next production.
