Take a group of energetic singers, talented kids and a great band and you have all the ingredients for a great show and this is just what we had at The Acorn Theatre in Worksop tonight.
This show was an eclectic mix of songs from eight shows ranging from Copacabana to Mary Poppins and from Blood Brothers to Phantom of The Opera all being able to show off the talent in this, plus a selection of numbers used in James Bond films.
The youngsters of the society were able to show off in Mary Poppins and even more so in Grease when Brandon Fletcher and Eleanor Smith combined with the senior chorus in Summer Nights, both were excellent and portrayed the two lead characters with ease in the well known number, Brandon was also able to show off his talents in Sandy which almost brought the house down.
Alison Wade was superb as Mrs Johnston in Blood Brothers, she was able to show off her singing talents in Easy Terms and this was compounded when she was joined by the full company in Tell me It’s not True, this number is well associated with this show and I have to say this was perfect with some really good harmonies from a well rehearsed company.
The opening of Act two presented Hannah Goodchild with a very professional performance of Diamonds are Forever from the film of the same name, her voice, actions and presentation was excellent.
Another great performance came from Toni Lemm and the junior chorus in Getting to Know You and Whistle a Happy Tune from The King and I. Toni was able to get the most out of these numbers with the help of the youngsters on stage who all looked resplendent. Toni had also stepped in at the last minute in the first half performing If I were a Bell from Guys and Dolls, she again was superb in this number and a credit to herself and the company. There was also a very moving number from Hollie Riley and Lucas Brammar when they performed We Kiss in a Shadow portraying the young lovers Tuptim and Lun Tha.
The company ended up by staging a magnificent concert version of Phantom of The Opera during which Lauren Deakin was able to show off her talents in Wishing you were Somehow Here Again which was breathtaking even when there were some issues with her microphone, she carried on regardless helped along by the band under the direction of David Burgess who was able to reduce their volume while she continued without any help or support from the sound system. Lauren was also able to shine when she was joined by Lucas Brammar and the chorus in the title song Phantom of the Opera; this was brilliant and loved by the entire audience. Another show stopper came from Hannah Goodchild and Joseph Bairstow in the number All I Ask of You; they were both able to get the emotion deserved in this number.
The evening was brought to an end with the honour of being asked to present well deserved NODA Awards to members of both the junior and senior members this was then followed by the whole company joining forces in The Best of Times.
