Tonight’s performance of SHOUT! The Mod Musical was an energetic, vibrant celebration of 1960s womanhood, colour, and sound. A coming-of-age tale charting the decade from 1960–1970, the show was told through a brilliantly curated soundtrack of the era’s greatest hits. With a simple yet effective and vividly coloured setting, Gillian Browns’ direction kept the storytelling crisp and character driven. While under Marlowe Simpson’s musical direction, the vocal performances were polished, confident, and well-balanced. Harmonies were tight, solos powerful, and every number was performed with clear passion for the material. Abbey Adams’ choreography was a perfect match for the swinging 60s vibe; energetic, playful, and well-executed by the whole cast.
Lynn MacFarlane (Orange Girl), Laura Ferrie (Green Girl), Marlowe Simpson (Yellow Girl), Jem Clark (Blue Girl), and Alex Craigie (Red Girl) each brought their unique flair to the stage, delivering powerhouse vocals and fully realised performances. Joyce Chapman shone as Gwendolyn Holmes, the ever-reliable agony aunt, adding comic charm and clever interjections that kept the show flowing. Backing vocals by Abbey Adams, Jen Harris, and Karen Young added richness and depth to the musical numbers, tying the sound together with polish and style.
The ladies appeared confident and committed throughout, with strong harmonies and clear diction. Costume and styling supported the era perfectly, and the transitions between scenes were seamless.
Most notably, the chemistry between the cast members was a standout – there was a tangible team spirit onstage that radiated into the audience. Every performer looked like they were genuinely enjoying themselves, and the audience responded in kind – clapping along, laughing in all the right places, engaged from start to finish, with visible enjoyment and enthusiastic applause throughout. The finale had audience members on their feet, proving just how infectious this show’s energy was.
SHOUT! at the Starlight Showroom was a colourful, feel-good triumph. Thanks to a committed cast, thoughtful direction, and fabulous score, tonight’s performance was not only a nostalgic trip through the swinging ’60s but a bold, fun-filled evening that truly resonated with its audience.
An absolute success – and one to remember! It was great to be back watching a DMS Show at the Starlight - long may it continue.
Well done and congratulations to all involved. Thank you for the Invite.
