The newly formed Spenborough Amateurs Youth Society (S.A.Y.S.), working under the umbrella of the senior society Cleckheaton & Spenborough O. & D. S. performed their first musical based on the weird and wonderful works of Dr. Seuss.
A good musical score, the innovative and varied music was quite enjoyable, and beautifully sung by the young cast. An assorted collection of characters all joined together to tell the story.
The "Cat in the Hat" (Aden Carter) narrated the story introducing the different characters, all of them different animals or birds, he causes them trouble, and then puts things right. Horton the Elephant (Lucy Peel) sang beautifully and was well matched by Gertrude McFuzz (Tyler Schofield) the tiny bird who wanted a longer tail, then found she could not fly. The Mayor and his wife (Lyndan Barclay/Hannah Carter) and their little Jojo (Evie Swales-Gledhill) gave very good personable portrayals of their characters. Exotic Mayzie La Bird (Kate Parker) gave a mature understanding of her role. The supporting cast all worked hard and added to the joie-de-vivre.
They worked on an open stage with a lovely bright, colourful set, and really good lighting, the costumes were well thought out with the children wearing tee shits with their animal or bird character on the front.
A most delightful evening's entertainment, my congratulations to all involved.
