Stephen Sondheim, born 1930 in New York, has the marmite effect, you either love or you hate his music. There are those who say his is the most influential career in musicals and I think all the awards he has won over the years goes someway to prove that.
LAMPS' fitting tribute to all that is Sondheim showcased songs from at least 19 of his shows, some known to me others not so much. The 16 members of the cast were absolutely superb with their solo and ensemble singing, with less choreography, the cast could concentrate more on the harmonies, dynamics and diction. They were accompanied by either recorded music or keyboard, played by Amanda Philip, who I understand only had a few days to prepare. Volume could have been turned down on occasions though!
Act 1 opened on to a set that represented Sondheim’s Study with one of the cast as Sondheim himself and during the act there was a biographical voiceover. Tom Tapsfield opened the show with ‘Instructions to the Audience’ from ‘Frogs’. No doubt adapted a little bit! His fine voice and diction set the standard, which was mirrored by the rest of the cast. Every song seamlessly flowed from one to the other either as solos or ensemble from West Side Story; Company; A Little Night Music: Into The Woods to name just a few.
Act ll became a nightclub with a red and black theme. A pity not all costumes followed the theme. We were treated to the same assortment of show songs but the highlights for me in this half was the couple that sang ‘Priest’ from ‘Sweeney Todd’ and, I have nothing but admiration for Rebecca Mansfield with her quick-fired rendition of ‘Not Getting Married’ from ‘Gypsy’ The night ended with rousing songs from ‘Company’.
What a great night. Congratulations Creative Team and Cast. There might be a few more members of ‘The Sondheim Society’!
