MAD KIDS                                                31 July 2024

Whenever I go to see M.A.D Kids, I am never disappointed!

School Of Rock the musical put on by this wonderful talented group was outstanding and on opening night too!

The set was good along with clever lighting and spotlights that helped create the atmosphere.

I always think that recorded music is difficult for adults to sing to , let alone youngsters but pull it off, they did with great aplomb!

Yes, it was opening night and there were some teething problems in Act Two with the sound, which I sure will now be rectified. It didn’t faze the performers who carried on regardless in real trouper tradition.

These young people possess a great energy and really want to sing and perform to the highest standard and that, under the direction of a talented director Claire Miles, is precisely what they achieved

Dewey Finn was superbly portrayed by this young actor, she is a born natural with her super timing and fine singing,  along with the energy and vibe so important for the role ; she had the audience in the palm of her hand and was oozing with confidence!

Ned Schneebly was a good performance in the role as Dewy’s best buddy, torn between friendship and love for his nagging partner, Patty. He got the character spot on. A super portrayal

Patty was done very well and with a beautiful and strong singing voice, she couldn’t fail! She never let up moaning about her unwelcome guest, Dewey and not only her words but her expressions and body language said it all. Another great performance.

Ms Rosalie Mullins the Teacher was wonderfully portrayed. A typical proud and traditional Principal, this young actor showed a maturity beyond her years and her singing was delivered with true feeling and depth. Her gradual transformation into a more relaxed and human persona was beautifully done.

The band came over well with Zack Mooneyham on guitar, Freddy Hamilton on drums Lawrence on piano and Kate on bass guitar played their roles with great energy.

Summer Hathaway, teacher’s pet had the role just right a real stickler for tradition but warmed to the situation and in an astute move by Dewey (signs of an excellent teacher despite all indications to the contrary) was persuaded to become Band Manager, a role she relished. Great part, very well portrayed.

The named roles were all very good, everyone developing their character so that each stood out, teachers, parents and pupils, plus the other players. Each had obviously taken a pride in their performance, however small a part and most importantly enjoying every moment.

The same comment for the chorus, some very young indeed, all acting and singing with enthusiasm and gusto.

With the wonderful tradition of this company that no one with commitment is turned away, and with 50 youngsters on stage and in the auditorium, it was sheer magic with choreography superbly executed right down to the youngest. Most impressive

Jill Clarke did a fine job as always on costumes!

This production does not happen overnight it’s a lot of hard work with a great many hours put into it and it certainly paid off judging by the audience reaction. They lapped it up and rewarded them with a standing ovation (including me!)

I am left with one question, is there anything this company cannot do?
