The comic opera was first performed at the Savoy Theatre in London on the 22nd January 1887 and received some mixed reviews. After some changes, including the title (to Ruddigore), it went onto to run for 288 performances.

For this production, EBOS welcomed back the production team of Hamilton/Dance and Bennett who produced such an amazing production of The Gondoliers. As with their previous show, the location was moved and they introduced many unusual items that obtained the appropriate laugh. Some of these seemed a little out of place (the Strictly come dancing sequence, for example) but this did not detract from a wonderful evening’s entertainment.

Once again I must congratulate all of the production team (including the costumes and lighting) for a splendid production. The principal roles were well cast and the re-location to an opera house worked very well (I know it will not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I loved the Phantom of the Opera references!).

I always admire societies who have the confidence to create something creative, and I am delighted when the audience is rewarded with such a spectacular production that has been well thought out, well rehearsed and well presented.
