Debuting in 2009 on Broadway, Rock of Ages is a jukebox musical built around classic rock songs from the 1980s, especially from the famous glam metal bands of that decade. The storyline is well-known and timeless in its simplicity: A small-town girl (Sherrie) and a city boy (Drew) meet on Sunset Strip while both pursuing their Hollywood dreams to become rock stars. Now a veteran, and having been unsuccessful in his attempts, Drew works at the Bourbon Club where he helps to get Sherrie a job at the centre of Hollywood’s rock scene. But how will this friendship develop and will either ever realise their dream?
The audience was welcomed to the Bourbon Club with metal scaffolding, side stairs to a raised balcony and nightclub style, orange lighting. Together with background rock music playing, the virtually full-house was buzzing with anticipation. The raised platform and video projection hid sliding doors which eventually revealed the band and thus kept the main stage area uncluttered.
John Haines (Director/Producer), Marc Fusil (Assistant Producer) and Grace Iglesias-Fernandez (Assistant Director) are all to be congratulated. This was a high-octane production that delivered exactly what it said on the tin - or in this case in the programme. From the 80’s soundtrack to the lighting and fog the action didn’t pause for breath. The casting was superb and the amount time, effort and attention to detail were obvious to see. The projection screen, with live camera action of the cast, really added to the atmosphere. I found the whole production to be incredibly slick, seamless and hugely entertaining. A special note here for the relaxed matinee performance. This type of inclusive consideration is to be applauded. Overall - what a truly memorable way for MTC to complete their 2024 season!
Whilst the principals enjoyed ‘the limelight’, it is important to recognise the energy, commitment and quality demonstrated by the entire cast. There was excellent support throughout with quality vocals, harmonies and dancing/movement on display. There was also a genuine look of happiness of all those performing. The final number, ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ was a truly rousing end to the show and one the entire company could enjoy. The finale, with band members making solo appearances front-and-centre stage was electric and truly like being at a gig. The entire cast was as absorbed in these individual performances as the audience.
Congratulations once again to everyone at MTC and those directly involved with Rock of Ages. Following ‘Much Ado about Nothing’, this was another excellent production and one worthy of recognition. I look forward to visiting with MTC again and enjoying your 2025 season!
